Stephen Romine is a Florida Bar Board Certified Criminal Trial Lawyer, a distinction held by less than 1% of all Florida attorneys. As a recognized specialist in criminal trial law, Romine has represented clients in state and federal court, police internal affairs investigations, cases before the Judicial Qualifications Commission and civil matters related to criminal cases. Romine was recognized as one of the top Florida criminal defense attorneys in Law & Politics’ 2006 inaugural edition of Florida Super Lawyers and holds an AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell, their highest recognition for legal skill and integrity.
In the nationally reported missing baby case of U.S. v. Aisenberg, The St. Petersburg Times reported, “Defense attorney Romine crushed the credibility of the prosecution’s star witness...On and off over the course of a week, Romine interrogated (the detective) about every one of her inconsistencies...(She) laughed nervously several times as Romine fired questions. At one point, she looked at the prosecutors and mouthed the words, ‘I’m sorry.’” The case was ultimately dismissed. Romine was instrumental as co-counsel in the acquittal of a corporate nightclub charged with federal crimes, and as lead counsel successfully defended a foreign national wrongfully accused in a million dollar federal drug importation case. His clients have included business owners, lawyers, doctors, law enforcement officers, judges and members of the news media.
In addition to his litigation practice, Romine has been successful before both the Second District Court of Appeal and the Florida Supreme Court. His appellate work has led to a number of published opinions, including a landmark Florida Supreme Court decision upholding his minor client’s right to privacy in consensual sex. That decision prompted the legislature to modernize Florida law governing the age range of lawful sexual consent.
Stephen Romine is a former prosecutor and assistant public defender. He served as president of the Pinellas County Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and chapter representative for the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Additionally, he is a former adjunct professor in the criminology program at St. Leo University and has lectured on criminal law matters at the University of South Florida, the criminal justice center at St. Petersburg College and the Pinellas County School system.
